Winter Jazzfest Review

Source: Bleader.

Last weekend I stumbled around Manhattan trying to take in the bonanza of the annual Winter Jazzfest. The event has expanded from two days to six, but its heart remains a two-night marathon spanning Friday and Saturday. This year more than 150 first-rate groups performed downtown at more than a dozen venues. Winter Jazzfest takes place during the annual conference of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, where curators and programmers talk shop and check out artists who want the organization’s members to book or hire them. This can make the Winter Jazzfest function something like a bazaar, where browsing is encouraged—sets are sometimes disrupted by crowds entering or exiting during the music. On the plus side, though, there are few other opportunities anywhere in the world to hear so many groups in such a short time.

New Magma DVD Trilogy

Christian Vander Quartet in the twentieth musi...

French music legends Magma will be releasing EMEHNTEHTT-RÉ TRILOGIE Live DVD in January 2017! The concerts were recorded live at Le Triton in November 2014 and feature the EMEHNTEHTT-RÉ TRILOGIE performed in full for the very first time!

Initiated in 1973, its composition beholds its whole fulfillment after more than four decades. It is the testimony of an unwaveringly timeless inspiration, of which the expectant present asserts itself beyond history. Connecting wide and contrasted scenes, it sets its coherence within its very dynamics, playing with chiaroscuro, between choral splendor, operatic jubilation and hurricane of spirits beyond graves. The different parts formerly scattered around are finally gathered in all their glory, finding their proper place in the grand scale of a now complete work, topped off with the bright blaze of a Grand Finale.

The two-disc DVD set features THE CROSSROADS OF TIMES, 115 minutes of conversations with Christian Vander on composing each movement of the trilogy (with English subtitles). Through a process of digging, expanding, anchoring and changing directions, his unique approach continues to propel Magma’s music forward.
