Saxophonist Tim Berne, drummer Ches Smith and guitarist David Torn push far beyond jazz’s known boundaries in Sun of Goldfinger. The mercurial trio explores the edges of the genre, infusing it with perspectives ranging from the minimalist to the cinematic to the metallic. The improvisation-based group effortlessly, seamlessly shifts from atmospheres into shattering mayhem to thrilling effect.

In his latest set of “Intellectual Improperty” pieces, composer Bruno Ruviaro copies, borrows, and steals music from an eclectic mix of sources, including Bach, Chopin, the 20th century avant-garde, Brazilian bossa-nova, Beyonce, and more. The result is a collection of “Pós-Tudos,” twelve solo piano etudes in which the sources are sometimes hidden, sometimes teasingly recognizable. Pianist Kyle Adam Blair comes from San Diego to play them fresh out of the oven.

A host of Bay Area musicians and activists converge at Studio Grand for a special Inauguration Day protest event—a show of solidarity, personhood, and shared catharsis. The evening will be comprised of a series of improvised groupings of prominent local creative musicians, poets, and sound artists. The event will also serve as an opportunity to share relevant information regarding local activism, community outreach, and other miscellaneous survival strategies for the oncoming political and cultural regime. Attendees are invited to share thoughts and relevant information. Proceeds will be directed to charity

Fearless improviser, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Anaïs Maviel presents a special solo set and an extended collaboration with acclaimed bassist, Michael Bisio, for her debut performance at ISSUE. Maviel first performs a solo vocal set, accompanying herself on the surdo (Brazilian drum) and kora.
