Taylor Ho Bynum Year End Update

Source: Taylor Ho Bynum.

My latest album, Enter the PlusTet, was released on October 28 and is now available to purchase or stream at Firehouse 12 Records. I can’t say enough about how happy and honored I am to have a recording with these incredible musicians, and I hope to keep moving this project forwards.

Last month, I also had a great gig with a new group I’m calling Rank Sentimentalist, featuring Evan Patrick, Marika Hughes, Stomu Takeishi, and Chad Taylor. The version we did of Bjork’s heartbreaker of a song Black Lake came out particularly well, so I’m offering it up as a year-end present for anyone interested, click here for audio and here for video.

A couple updates on orchestral matters. I had an amazing time last week with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and conductor Ilan Volkov, premiering my composition Uncle, Another Tale and improvising on Anthony Braxton‘s Composition No. 63, along with hearing great performances of Braxton’s Comp. No. 27 and the premiere of James Fei‘s The Loudness of Single and Combined Sounds. The whole concert will be broadcast on the BBC 3’s Hear and Now on January 28, 2017 and will be available online for a month following the broadcast, stay tuned. Also, my first orchestra composition, Questions of Transfiguration, which was performed by the Tri-Centric Orchestra in 2013, will be digitally released next month on the new Tri-Centric Forum record label, along with fantastic pieces by Daniel Blake and Ingrid Laubrock that I had the pleasure of conducting. Keep an eye on Tri-Centric for details!

Finally, in my final gigs of the year, I’m playing in a new Double Trio led by my long-time collaborator and dear friend Tomas Fujiwara. It should be an amazing project, also featuring Ralph Alessi on trumpet, Mary Halvorson and Brandon Seabrook on guitars, and Tomas and Gerald Cleaver on drums.

The performances:

Wednesday, November 30 and Thursday December 1, at the Jazz Gallery in Manhattan. Sets at 7:30 & 9:30
Friday, December 2 at Firehouse 12 in New Haven, CT. Sets at 8:30 & 10:00

And as some musical sorbet, Tomas and I will be playing a duo at the New Revolution Arts Series in Brooklyn on Saturday December 10.

Interview with Bent Knee

Source: DMME.net.

New music rarely can surprise today but, once in a while, artists emerge whose works are as accessible as they’re intellectual, and it doesn’t take any effort to be charmed and mesmerized by such creators. Boston’s BENT KNEE belong to this category: unlike many of their perceivably alternative peers, the sextet’s exploration of ethereal and noisy extremes isn’t “for the sake of it” kind of exercise, just because the result feels so organic – never more so, perhaps, than on the band’s latest album, their third full-length studio offering.

AMN Picks of the Week: Peter Kuhn / Gaetano Cappella / Franklin Kiermyer / Offthesky

Here is where I post, at a frequency of about once a week, a list of the new music that has caught my attention that week. All of the releases listed below I’ve heard for the first time this week and come recommended.

Peter Kuhn Trio – The Other Shore (2016)
Gaetano Cappella – Maiella (2016)
Franklin Kiermyer – Closer To The Sun (2016)
Offthesky – Silent Went to the Sea (2016)
