Reinier Van Houdt plays Robert Ashley
Brian Schober & Jane Ross Sorkin: White Witch Project
Dutch pianist Reinier Van Houdt performs Maneuvers for Small Hands (1961), one of Robert Ashley’s first major explorations. The work is a catalogue of puzzles for the contemporary musician, consisting of 110 cards in which 10 fundamental actions are spun out into 110 movements. Brian Schober and Joan Ross Sorkin present a monodrama about voodoo, murder, and revenge, scored for soprano and percussion. Based on the 19th century Jamaican legend of Annie Palmer, a white woman notoriously known as “The White Witch of Rose Hall,” with mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert and percussionist Jared Soldiviero.
