with Billy Martin, percussion; Ashley Tini, percussion; Chris Powell, percussion; Pete Angevine, percussion; Michael Santa Cruz, percussion; Joe Sullivan, percussion; and John Caserta, percussion
Bartram’s Garden, 5400 Lindbergh Blvd.

Ars Nova Workshop is pleased to present the return of Medeski Martin and Wood percussionist Billy Martin, presenting an evening of game pieces for percussion ensemble.

The wide-ranging, exploratory percussionist will perform solo and conduct The Whirlygig Orchestra, a specially-assembled percussion ensemble playing on bamboo, wood, metal, pandeiro, seed pods, bird calls and other uncategorized instruments. The orchestra will perform Martin’s “Stridulations for the Good Luck Feast,” a suite of percussion compositions that could be considered a collaborative game, played not by opponents to win or lose but by a team of individuals whose primary challenge is collective improvisation. The object of Stridulations is the formation of a self-governing ensemble acting as one ‘organism’ that produces unique arrangements each performance.
