With great pleasure, and some pride, we announce the 28th season of the Interpretations Contemporary Music Series. As we have from the beginning, we continue to focus on contemporary composers and their interpreters, in an effort to nurture the development of our growing new music community.

Sarah Weaver: Works for Mark Dresser & SLM Ensemble

Vibraphonist/percussionist Kevin Norton presents Staten Island: All That Is Solid Melts Into Air, a song cycle (with and without words), featuring his group Breakfast of Champignon(s), with Esther Noh (violin), Angelica Sanchez (piano), Julia Simoniello (voice, guitar), & Steve LaSpina (bass). Sarah Weaver presents Polydimensional Transformation for Mark Dresser (solo bass) and Resonance Synthesis for the SLM Ensemble (Jane Ira Bloom, Ellery Eskelin, David Taylor, Min Xiao-Fen, Samir Chatterjee, Satoshi Takeishi, Denman Maroney, Mark Dresser, & Sarah Weaver).

Matthias Kawl Trio “After the Rain” & More

Violinist/composer Malcolm Goldstein presents improvisations, both open & structured, for solo violin/voice. Composer Matthias Kawl brings his trio of flute, guitar, and percussion, to present After The Rain (with baritone Thomas Buckner) and Opium for T, as well as Untitled (For A Flutist), by Berlin-based composer Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri.

Erik Friedlander’s Black Phebe
Juho Laitinen: “Manifesto of Sounding”

Ubiquitous cellist Erik Friedlander presents his new trio Black Phebe, with Shoko Nagai (piano, accordion, electronics) and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion). Composer Juho Laitinen (cello, voice, synthesizer) presents original compositions that deal with the ambiguous characteristics in the physicality of sound; an open-minded approach to new sounds made by new instruments and the promotion of a non-hierarchical, freely associative art experience.

Reinier Van Houdt plays Robert Ashley
Brian Schober: White Witch (A Monodrama)

Dutch pianist Reinier Van Houdt performs Maneuvers for Small Hands (1961), one of Robert Ashley’s first major explorations. The work is a catalogue of puzzles for the contemporary musician, consisting of 110 cards in which 10 fundamental actions are spun out into 110 movements. Brian Schober’s monodrama about voodoo, murder, and revenge is set to a libretto by Joan Ross Sorkin and scored for soprano and percussion. Based on the 19th century Jamaican legend of Annie Palmer, a white woman notoriously known as “The White Witch of Rose Hall.”

Robert Dick & Ursel Schlicht “The Galilean Moons”
Gustavo Aguilar Get Libre Collective

Flutist Robert Dick and pianist Ursel Schlicht celebrate the release of their CD The Galilean Moons, a suite inspired by each of the four Jovian moons discovered by Galileo, and co-created for the Festival Cervantino in Mexico. Percussionist Gustavo Aguilar premieres But We Must Build As If The Sand Were Stone, an evening-length work for quartet based on the writings of Jorge Luis Borges, featuring Anthony Davis (piano), Earl Howard (live electronic processing), JD Parran (woodwinds) and Gustavo Aguilar (percussion).

David Behrman: “Unexpected Places”
Gisburg Sings With Michel Foucault & Friedrich Nietzsche

Vocalist Gisburg presents a musical visual theater for vocals and live band based on Michel Foucault’s “History Of Madness” as well as works by Friedrich Nietzsche. David Behrman presents Unexpected Places: new and older reworked pieces, and some re-emerging from the quarries of the 20th century.

Thomas Buckner, baritone, with JD Parran, winds, Andrew Drury, percussion, Earl Howard, electronics, Theodore Mook, cello, and Pete Wyer, guitar, perform Night and Fog (1987), by Annea Lockwood (based on poems by Osip Mandelstam and Carolyn Forshe); Left-handed Quark, by Earl Howard, Almost Invisible, by Pete Wyer (based on poems by Mark Strand), and an as yet untitled work by Daniel Rothman.

SPACE (Roscoe Mitchell, Thomas Buckner, & Scott Robinson)
Reggie Nicholson Percussion Concept

The seminal improvising trio SPACE was originally formed in 1979 by Roscoe Mitchell, Thomas Buckner and Gerald Oshita, featuring works by both Oshita and Mitchell, as well as group improvisation. This will be the first performance of the group since the passing of Gerald Oshita, with multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson as the new third member. Drummer/percussionist Reggie Nicholson, a member of the AACM since 1979, will present new music for his group Percussion Concept.

All concerts start at 8PM unless otherwise noted.
