THE BAD PLUS (Tuesday through Aug. 14) This hyperintelligent and crashingly heroic trio — Ethan Iverson on piano, Reid Anderson on bass, David King on drums — revives some proven old strategies on “It’s Hard,” out later this month. The album, which will be previewed in part during this weeklong run, deftly reimagines familiar songs by popular figures ranging from Prince to Johnny Cash to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. At 8 and 10:30 p.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, Greenwich Village, 212-475-8592, bluenote.net. (Chinen)

CINDY BLACKMAN SANTANA GROUP (Tuesday and Wednesday) A drummer of explosive power, Ms. Blackman Santana is at home in a vertiginous fusion vein. Her band has Aurelien Budynek on guitar, Zaccai Curtis on piano and Felix Pastorius on electric bass. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, 212-576-2232, jazzstandard.com. (Chinen)

JEN SHYU AT THE STONE (Tuesday through Aug. 14) Ms. Shyu is a vocalist and player of folkloric stringed instruments, drawn to fascinating and often challenging designs. Her weeklong residency at the Stone will involve what she calls a six-day ritual, “Song of Silver Geese,” with collaborators including Mat Maneri on viola, Ben Monder on guitar, John Hébert on bass and Hong Jinwook on soribuk, a traditional Korean drum. At 8 and 10 p.m., Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com. (Chinen)

JOHN ZORN: BAGATELLES AT THE VANGUARD (Tuesday through Aug. 14) One of the least expected new staples at the Village Vanguard has been John Zorn, the avant-garde composer, alto saxophonist and provocateur. Next week he will draw from his Book of Bagatelles — some 300 short pieces composed last spring — with a different configuration of musicians for every set. Among them are the pianist Uri Caine, performing in duos with John Medeski on organ and Jon Irabagon on saxophone, at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday; Asmodeus, a group with Marc Ribot on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums, at 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday; Craig Taborn, performing a solo piano set at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday; and a quartet led by Mr. Irabagon at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday. At 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village, 212-255-4037, villagevanguard.com. (Chinen)
