RIP Dominic Duval

Source: GoFundMe. A benefit crowdsourcing account has been set up for his family.

In life, there are ‘Hellos’ and ‘GoodByes’. Unfortunately, we are writing to you here today to inform you that it has come time to say goodbye to our loved one, Dominic Drwal aka Dominic Duval Senior.

As some of you may know, Dominic has been battling a rare case of lymphoma known as Mycosis Fungoides for some years now. After only receiving a few rounds of chemotherapy (which he was unable to continue consistently due to other health issues which had him in and out of the hospital for months prior) the disease has finally taken one more turn for the worse.

Upcoming Mikroton Recordings Releases

Source: Mikroton Recordings.

Ilia Belorukov & Kurt Liedwart – Sufka

Ilia Belorukov and Kurt Liedwart work together since 2009, they used to combine exquisite and fragile saxophone playing with sine waves, field recordings and quiet noises, sometimes Kurt Liedwart dropped his instruments, electronics and laptop, in favor of working with objects and space. “Sufka” is the last installment in the series of releases on Mikroton Digital. It was recorded during the duo’s tour in Lisbon in “Carpe Diem Arte e Pesquisa” in very special circumstances.

Miguel A. García & Sebastien Branche – Pscipilnitsa

Electronic musician Miguel A. Garcia already appeared on our label two years ago on Uropygi. Now we’ve got two pieces recorded in Warsaw and Madrid with his collaborator and saxophonist Sebastien Branche. Both unexceptionally fit each other’s unpredictable movements and they knit a sound fabric full of unpredictable turns and jumps of dynamic, pitches and timbres.

Brinstaar & Kurt Liedwart – Mars Attacks

Mars Attacks is the first collaboration by Brinstaar and Kurt Liedwart. The pair have never worked before playing this live concert in Center Mars in Moscow in February 2016. They chose to work texturally and sonorically independently from each other letting the improvisation to unfold naturally and maintaining coherence and connection of open and free sound materials.

Sergey Kostyrko & Kurt Liedwart – Wellenfelder

Kurt Liedwart and Sergey Kostyrko duo was started in 2015 as a project focused on improvised and noise music. Using different analogue synthesizers and electronics, they make music of an abstract nature, where atmospheric textures, multilayered fields of sounds, waves and drones intertwine with controlled noise, field recordings and minimal sequenced rhythms. Following their debut split album released in 2015 which received positive reviews from The Sound Projector and Vital Weekly, Mikroton Digital is proud to present a new album Wellenfelder.
Wellefelder goes on with exploration of their instruments creating five tracks of haunted beauty, jittered rhythms and abstract landscapes.

A Vivacious Celebration of Steve Reich in New York

Steve Reich turns 80 on Oct. 3, and the party has already started.

Over the last week, he was celebrated by the Lincoln Center Festival in a series called Reich/Reverberations, comprising three concerts that included outstanding performances of two 1970s masterpieces, “Drumming” and “Music for 18 Musicians.”

And if more than three decades of centrality to New York’s culture was not evidence enough that Mr. Reich occupies a position unique among composers, both cultish and canonical, there’s plenty of chance to engage with his work in the coming months. Symphony Space, the Miller Theater and Carnegie Hall, where he will hold the Richard and Barbara Debs Composer’s Chair next season, will all present retrospectives.

15 Questions with Daniel Barbiero

Source: 15 questions interviews AMN contributor Daniel Barbiero.

When did you start composing – and what or who were your early passions and influences?

It seems like I’ve been composing ever since I’ve been conscious of music as something one could compose—as opposed to something that was just out there, in the air–whether or not I actually knew what I was doing. The urge to experiment with creating objects out of sound has always been very strong, and predates my having the conceptual vocabulary to be able to articulate that thought. And it’s proceeded along two parallel lines. The first is purely pragmatic—the need to have material that can be used for performance, generally as launching points for improvisation. The second is more concerned with exploring specific problems or concepts—a kind of counterfactual, or “what if?” approach to organizing sound. This latter approach grows directly out of my very earliest fascination with composition. It’s never left me, really.
