Seattle Scene: July 20-30, 2016

From Seattle’s Wayward Music Series:

WAYWARD MUSIC SERIES
Chapel Performance Space at Good Shepherd Center
4th Floor, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N, Seattle 98103 (corner N 50th St. in Wallingford)
Every month, Nonsequitur and a community of like-minded presenters and artists offer ten concerts of adventurous music in an informal yet respectful all-ages setting: contemporary classical, free improvisation, the outer limits of jazz, electronic music, microtonal/new instruments, sound art, and other extraordinary sonic experiences.

Garek Jon Druss + Pulling Out the Light + God & Vanilla
Wed. July 20; 7:30; $5 – $15 online/at the door

Further Records showcase: Garek Jon Druss performs two new pieces from his forthcoming release The Wellspring of Light written during an artist residency in Finland. Pulling Out the Light/Briana Jones’ long-form, beatless pieces plumb chthonic depths of mood, conjuring fascinating dystopian vistas. God & Vanilla, the ethereal dark ambient project of solo guitarist Richard O’Leary, creates lush tapestries and hauntingly inviting dreamscapes.

Earshot: ACMD + Hunter Gather
Thu. July 21; 8 PM; $5 – $15 at the door

Earshot’s Jazz: The 2nd Century program invites Seattle musicians to consider the future of jazz. ACMD is saxophonist Ivan Arteaga and digital artist Marcin Pączkowski, with an expanded lineup to include Greg Sinibaldi on baritone sax and dancer Mariah Davis. Led by saxophonist/composer Levi Gillis, Hunter Gather weaves aspects of contemporary music into arrangements that leave space for improvisation and spontaneous interplay.

Ethan Iverson on Albert Ayler at 80

Source: DO THE M@TH.

The definite Ayler performance may be the medley at Coltrane’s funeral with Don Ayler, Richard Davis, and Milford Graves. There isn’t even any blowing, except that near the end Ayler repeatedly screams to profoundly eerie effect as his brother sounds the last trump. I first heard a bootleg of this many years ago, then it came out on the deluxe Revenant set, now it’s just up on YouTube. On Albert Ayler’s 80th birthday there is no better use of six minutes of your time than dialing this up, closing your eyes, and mourning our humanity.
