Every month, Nonsequitur and a community of like-minded presenters and artists offer ten concerts of adventurous music in an informal yet respectful all-ages setting: contemporary classical, free improvisation, the outer limits of jazz, electronic music, microtonal/new instruments, sound art, and other extraordinary sonic experiences.

Grex + Citizens Band
Fri. June 17; 8 PM; $5 – $15 at the door

SF Bay Area band Grex offers a unique blend of popular song, free improvisation, and experimental jazz, performing with the likes of Fred Frith, Tony Levin, and the Kronos Quartet. Citizens Band is a Seattle-based trio comprised of Ivan Arteaga, Chris Icasiano, and Jeff Johnson, a multi-generational project focused on original jazz with plenty of room for improvisation and spontaneity.

Crome, Kelley, Schafii, Degenerate
Sat. June 18; 8 PM; $5 – $15 at the door

Samuel A. Crome debuts Delicate Air, a long form piece for prepared electric guitar, alto sax, bells and radio. Greg Kelley plays unamplified solo trumpet improvisations. Cameron Shafii’s compositions are inflected by software processes involving spectral analysis, convolution, recombination file handling, and stochastic elements. DJ Degenerate maintains the vibe between sets.

Rhys Chatham’s Favorite Albums

English: A self-portrait photograph by and of ...

Source: The Quietus.

This Baker’s Dozen comprises Chatham‘s early musical epiphanies, or works by composers whose ideas played a key part in cracking open his young mind. As is often the case in minimalism, the sound always returns to its source, and as Rhys asserts, you can certainly hear the influence of Steve Reich and Charlemagne Palestine in the patient intensity of his new work, Pythagorean Dream. With head-spinning use of phase-shifting and delay pedals, it sees Chatham making maximal impact with more minimal instrumentation after the gargantuan 400-guitar piece A Crimson Grail. With shades of trumpet, guitar and flute, all played by Chatham himself, it’s the impactful work of a true journeyman. With this list, Chatham gives us a view of the people that helped mould him.

Beginning of the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival Reviewed

Source: Sequenza21.

Most New Yorkers are walking about, minding their own business, completely oblivious to the international sonic earthquake vibrating through their midst all week: The New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF). The first wave of the festival (seven concerts) took place as part of the New York Philharmonic’s Biennale at National Sawdust in Brooklyn last week. Yet the lion’s share of the festival is happening right now: 28 more concerts during June 13-19, at Abrons Arts Center on Grand St., for a total of 35 concerts. Yes you read that correctly: 35 concerts of electroacoustic music, including some 350 works, by almost as many composers from all around the world! Indeed a mammoth undertaking organized, produced, and presented miraculously by Hubert Howe, Travis Garrison, David Reeder, Howie Kenty, and a highly dedicated energetic staff.
