New Amsterdam Records Profiled

Picture a roomful of New York record execs, and one might imagine some sleek Midtown office where cynical moguls strike big deals over cocktails and yellowtail tartare. Then there’s the crew at New Amsterdam Records, the prestigious local label known for releasing some of the nation’s most cutting-edge new classical and “post-genre” music. The setting for a recent listening session: their publicity director’s kitchen table. The spread: Popchips and coffee. Short on manpower, they did double-duty stuffing envelopes for a press mailing.

Mike Nicolas (cello) Erik Friedlander (cello)
From March to May 2015 John Zorn wrote 300 new tunes collected in a book of music called The Bagatelles. Like the Masada book (only more atonal) the compositions are meant to be interpreted by a wide range of musicians. Tonight two great cellists take up the challenge.

Claws & Wings
Erik Friedlander (cello) Sylvie Courvoisier (piano) Ikue Mori (electronics)
Claws & Wings is written in memory of Erik’s late wife. He, along with his daughter, were left to ponder how to make sense of the loss, and how to move on. The music strongly resonates with Erik’s mindset at the time: meditating on a life lost, regaining his balance, and then moving forward with optimism. Claws & Wings is dedicated to this ongoing process.
