The Necks created an hour of exquisite, constantly evolving tintinnabulation on Thursday night at the Whitney Museum of American Art, sharing a bill with a solo performance by the composer Alvin Curran. It was a rare United States appearance by this Australian trio, which has been collaborating for 30 years on music that defines a particular, meditative intersection of Minimalism, with its systematic repetition, and jazz, with its improvisatory openness. The Necks explore motion within stasis and freedom within boundaries, applying detailed, subtle virtuosity and the stamina of nonstop playing to summon a rapturous concentration.
