Jim Black Trio at Le Poisson Rouge Reviewed

The Jim Black Trio closed its show at Le Poisson Rouge late Monday night with a transfixing burst of turbulence called “Beariere.” Elias Stemeseder, the band’s pianist, whipped up a low-end fury out of which a melody surprisingly emerged, like a sparrow from a bramble. Thomas Morgan’s bass was a movable pivot, holding the center of the churn. Mr. Black, on drums, struck an elusive truce between bombast and finesse, driving his agenda along with the pulse of the tune.
