Yo La Tengo and Alvin Lucier in New York Reviewed

Source: The New York Times.

The composer Alvin Lucier, now 84, is interested in repetition, long tones, overtones, music as process, music as directed improvisation, the perception of sound and any metaphorical ideas that might roll out of those perceptions like dividends.

It’s not a stretch to put him up against a rock band, as long as the rock band has any investment in some of those things. It’s much less of a stretch when the band is Yo La Tengo — Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew — who, seemingly, have an investment in all of those things. The Ecstatic Music Festival brought them together on Wednesday night at Merkin Concert Hall. What happened before a packed house wasn’t a double bill or a single integrative work or even at all times a collaboration. It felt about as casual as a concert with program notes can be, and the spirits of both parties were present in it all.
