Denman Maroney Trio At An die Musik LIVE in Baltimore

DENMAN MARONEY TRIO
Denman Maroney (piano) / Ratzo Harris (bass) / Bob Meyer (drums)

Call it cubist jazz. In most music you relate to a beat. In ours you pick a beat to relate to. Pick another, and your perspective changes. Listen casually, and it sounds loose; closely, and it sounds tight. In most harmony, a chord sounds different if the intervals are inverted. In our temporal harmony or relative time, the same thing happens with rhythm. This is perfectly natural. Stars, planets, and moons keep separate but related times—the music of the spheres—as do clouds, waves, birds, arms, legs, eyes, ears, lungs, hearts, and minds. And we think we keep time by our watches! No; we keep alternate times.

Avant-garde composer and master cellist keeps jazz fresh and exciting. In the fertile creative music grounds of Chicago, the versatile, overachieving cellist and composer Fred Lonberg-Holm thrives with the ability to stay limber, traversing jazz, classical, rock, pop and the avant-garde. He is the bandleader of the jazz outfit Valentine Trio and a member of numerous ensembles including Vox Arcana and Ballister, and he has collaborated with free-jazz heavyweights like Joe McPhee, Peter Brötzmann and Ken Vandermark.

William Hooker Interview

Source: All About Jazz.

I consider myself a “jazz musician.” I know this word is defined in many different ways. My work fits in the jazz tradition because it’s based on improvisation..it’s based on learning one’s craft..it’s based on written out music in many cases..it’s based on traditional duo, trio, quartet and sextet settings. I use a Ludwig drum kit. It is set up traditionally: one tom, bass drum, floor tom, two cymbals, high hat, and a snare. Usually this is my preferred set up. I’m hoping that many of the projects I have happening will be recorded and performed live. Many musicians and the relationships that have been building will come to fruition. As this occurs, I will experience the beauty of this music… and I will continue to play.
