Jon Irabagon (Tuesday and Wednesday) A wily, hyperliterate saxophonist who has successfully ducked in and out of the mainstream jazz tradition, Mr. Irabagon leads two small groups next week. On Tuesday he re-enlists the ace rhythm section from “Behind the Sky,” an album released last year: Luis Perdomo on piano, Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Rudy Royston on drums. On Wednesday the format is a trio with two equally brilliant partners: the guitarist Mary Halvorson and the drummer Nasheet Waits. Rudresh Mahanthappa: ‘Bird Calls’ (Monday) “Bird Calls,” the most recent release by the alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, takes Charlie Parker as a point of departure if not a distant lexicographical ancestor. Sam Newsome-Andrew Cyrille Duo (Saturday) Mr. Newsome has made a specialty of the soprano saxophone solo recital, working with original material as well as music by the titan of that format, Steve Lacy. NYC Winter Jazzfest Marathon (Friday and Saturday) The highlight and centerpiece of any Winter Jazzfest is this two-night deluge, which will take place in more than a dozen spaces in and around Greenwich Village. Among the myriad things to look out for this year are an ECM Records stage at the New School Tishman Auditorium, with the Avishai Cohen Quartet and Tim Berne’s Sideshow, among others; a Revive Music stage at the Bitter End, with acts like the drummer Makaya McCraven and the saxophonist Terrace Martin; and an intimate lineup at the Django in the Roxyl, with the singer-songwriter Camila Meza, the guitarist Gilad Hekselman and others. Rova Saxophone Quartet (Sunday and Tuesday through Jan. 24) “Rova Channeling Coltrane,” a new album and DVD, chronicles this group’s visionary Electric Ascension project, featuring special guests like the guitarist Nels Cline. Matthew Shipp Trio (Wednesday) The pianist Matthew Shipp has a new album, “The Conduct of Jazz,” which smartly ducks in and around the mainstream conventions of the post-bop piano trio. His partners on the album, rejoining him in an unusually chic club setting next week, are the bassist Michael Bisio and the drummer Newman Taylor Baker. Still Dreaming (through Sunday) Old and New Dreams, a quartet active roughly during the Carter and Reagan eras, celebrated the rambling spirit of Ornette Coleman, from a close vantage: all of its members, including the tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, were former band mates of his. Which in some respects makes Still Dreaming a tribute to a tribute — though the group has the right lineup for such a task, starting with Mr. Redman’s son the saxophonist Joshua Redman, and extending to the cornetist Ron Miles, the bassist Scott Colley and the drummer Brian Blade. South Korean filmmaker Lee Hangjun and noise musician Hong Chulki have performed together since 2006 as the audiovisual research project “Expanded Celluloid, Extended Phonograph,” investigating the performativity of the darkroom, the screening room, the private studio and live performance.

Here, in Lee’s U.S. debut, they present two works:

In Film Walk (2012), the film projector’s optical sound head reads Lee’s hand-made perforations as sound, as he draws the film strip while walking around the space. Instead of continuous image movement, the perforations make what the artist calls “a hole a sound,” where sounds mass according to the speed of his step and length of the performance.

Phantom Schoolgirl Army (2013) is based on a collection of military photographic portraits, and elaborates on the story of North Korean spies disguised as high school girls during the Yeosu-Suncheon rebellion of 1948. The South Korean government used this legend as anti-Communist propaganda.

Italian composer Alessandro Bosetti presents the U.S. premiere of Plane/Taléa, an immersive, four-channel electronic sound work stemming from his interest in vocal and polyphonic music. In this special concert, amateur performers wear headphones and respond to spoken instructions from the artist. These instructions (e.g., questions to answer, or directions to imitate a sound, to reveal a secret thought, etc.) are triggered by algorithm in an ever­-changing geometric configuration.

Plane/Taléa expands and exposes single voices within a granular polyphony, where small details and tonal inflections combine in textured chorus.

Chris Abrahams is best known as the piano player of the long-form improv trio, The Necks—an Australian band that has built up quite an international following over the last thirty years. In that time he also has developed a formidable reputation as a solo pianist.

Abrahams’ piano music explores the resonating properties of the vibrating piano string, coaxing from it strange, varied and beautiful sounds that often transcend the generally observed tonal qualities of the instrument. At times his approach borders on the electronic, acoustically modeling reverbs, distortion, delays and low frequency oscillations.

Tonight he performs new work, as he makes his Chicago solo debut.

Reducing the Tempo to Zero is Ben Vida’s new long-form composition for three female vocalists and electronics. As an investigation of presentness, RtTtZ is designed to illuminate the “now” as an ever-changing point of multiple durations and potentialities. By using long-form structures, the linear/temporal path is blurred, resulting in a musical composition experienced through the summing of multiple tempos, melodies, textures and rhythms into a string of spatial moments.

Joseph Clayton Mills
Joseph Clayton Mills is a musician, artist, and writer who lives and works in Chicago. His text-based paintings, assemblages, and sound installations have been exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Europe and his work has appeared in numerous publications, including The New Yorker. He is the author of the short-story collection Zyxt, and in 2012 published Nabokrossvords, a translation of early Russian crosswords by Vladimir Nabokov. He is an active participant in the improvised and experimental music community in Chicago, where his collaborators have included Adam Sonderberg and Steven Hess (as Haptic), Michael Vallera (as Maar), Noé Cuéllar (asParital), Sylvain Chaveau, Jason Stein, Michael Pisaro, and Olivia Block, among many others; his recordings have appeared on numerous labels, including Another Timbre, FSS, and Entr’acte. In 2013, in conjunction withNoé Cuéllar, he launched Suppedaneum, a label focused on releasing scores and their realizations.

Alvin Lucier
Alvin Lucier (born May 14, 1931) is an American composer of experimental music and sound installations that explore acoustic phenomena and auditory perception. A long-time music professor at Wesleyan University, Lucier was a member of the influential Sonic Arts Union, which includedRobert Ashley, David Behrman, and Gordon Mumma. Much of his work is influenced by science and explores the physical properties of sound itself: resonance of spaces, phase interference between closely tuned pitches, and the transmission of sound through physical media.

Phill Niblock
Composer, filmmaker, videographer, and director of Experimental Intermedia. Niblock’s music is an exploration of sound textures created by multiple tones in very dense, often atonal tunings (generally microtonal in conception) performed in long durations. The layering of long tones only very slightly distinct in pitch creates a multitude of beats and generates complex overtone patterns and other fascinating psychoacoustic effects.

The pieces are drones on a single note, or two notes, or a chord, coloured by microtonal inflections. Within apparent stasis there is constant movement. I like Robert Ashley’s comment that in Niblock’s music “something happens in the way of change that is not fundamentally a change of pitch: it is a change of what the pitch sounds like”.’
