Dal Niente Presents: Mabel Kwan, piano

Sunday, January 3, 2016
8:30pm 10:00pm
Constellation Chicago
3111 N Western Ave Chicago, IL, 60618 United States

Dal Niente pianist Mabel Kwan celebrates the release of her solo album with a program of recent works for piano and clavichord. Rebecca Saunders’s Shadow makes extensive use of the sostenuto and sustaining pedals to explore the play of acoustic shadows–harmonic clouds of color which are projected into the acoustic resonance of the preceding gesture. Fredrick Gifford’s Graft Blossom uses incidental features of Dada artist Marcel Duchamp‘s The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass) as structural elements. Mauricio Pauly augments the piano with new superpowers using amplification and real-time electronic processing, while Santiago Diez-Fischer searches for a poetic language that comes out of irrational sounds and dramatic silences. For Alexandre Lunsqui’s Glaes, Mabel and percussionist Greg Beyer join forces to create a “glass sound” machine with music that pulses, disintegrates, and then pulses again.

Program:

Santiago Diez-Fischer: one poetic switch (2014) for piano with objects
Mauricio Pauly: Patrulla reliquia (2015) for amplified piano, live electronics and recordings of dry leaves dragged and crushed over ceramic slabs
Fredrick Gifford: Graft Blossom (2015) for clavichord, toy piano and prepared piano (World Premiere)
Rebecca Saunders: Shadow (2013) study for piano
Alexandre Lunsqui: Glaes (2007) for prepared piano and percussion

Cm5 stalwart Pat Greene brought Bill Orcutt’s name into our infrequent steering committee meetings for three years running before we finally presented a solo performance by the guitarist on April 4th. Without a further utterance of “Orcutt”, he returns a second time to the Greene curated Gallery at Avalon Island. On this occasion, the suggestion was from the torrential trap kit drummer Chris Corsano, pulling collaborator Orcutt in for a second look at the bucolic little theater upstairs at Avalon. Credit the extensive tendrils of the family network getting both musicians into Florida for the Season.
