Barry Altschul and the 3dom Factor (Saturday) Mr. Altschul, a drummer of deep experience in the post-1960s avant-garde, has a new album, “Tales of the Unforeseen,” with the excellent trio he calls 3dom Factor. Featuring the saxophonist Jon Irabagon and the bassist Joe Fonda, it’s a tough, elastic band that moves in and out of phase. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village; 212-989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com. (Nate Chinen)
Coltrane Revisited (through Saturday) Timed to coincide with would have been John Coltrane’s 89th birthday (he was born on Sept. 23, 1926), the pianist Steve Kuhn — one of Coltrane’s sidemen, however briefly — assembles a respectful cast. Eric Alexander stands in Coltrane’s instrument, tenor saxophone; the rhythm section has Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Steve Smith on drums. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, 212-581-3080, birdlandjazz.com. (Chinen)
Peter Evans at the Stone (through Sunday) Mr. Evans, a trumpeter with an expressive command of timbre and texture, concludes his week at the Stone with two of his core outlets: a quintet, which will perform one marathon set on Friday, starting at 8 p.m.; and the Zebulon Trio, which will play at 8 and 10 p.m. on Saturday, welcoming the pianist David Bryant for the second set. The finale, in both sets on Sunday, will be “House Special,” with Levy Lorenzo on percussion, Paul Wilson on keyboards, Sam Pluta on electronics and Kassa Overall on drums. At 8 and 10 p.m., Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com. (Chinen)
Festival of New Trumpet Music (through Tuesday) This annual hornucopia shines a light on new works by or for trumpeters, with an nonrestrictive relationship to genre. Highlights include “Signatures in Brass,” a showcase organized by the ascendant postbop trumpeter Marquis Hill (Saturday at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. at the Jazz Gallery, 1160 Broadway, fifth floor); two nights of a series called “Visionaries,” featuring avant-garde upstarts like Jaimie Branch (Sunday and Monday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Downtown Music Gallery, 13 Monroe Street); and a concert honoring the veteran trumpeter-bandleader Eddie Henderson, featuring his band and some homage-paying guests (Tuesday at 8 p.m., the New School, 55 West 13th Street). Ingrid Laubrock: Ubatuba (Friday) Ms. Laubrock is a tenor saxophonist drawn to dynamic tension, and in this band — its name, also the title of a new album, would seem to be a nod to its tuba player, Dan Peck — she has strong partners for her agenda. Along with Mr. Peck, they are Tim Berne on alto saxophone, Ben Gerstein on trombone and her husband, Tom Rainey, on drums. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village, 212-989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com. (Chinen)
Trio 3 (Tuesday through Thursday) The alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, the bassist Reggie Workman and the drummer Andrew Cyrille hail from the same broad-minded jazz generation and share an agenda of rugged epiphany. Trio 3, as they call their superhero collective, has regularly expanded its ranks to include a notable pianist, like the three appearing in turns during this run: Ethan Iverson (Tuesday), Vijay Iyer (Wednesday) and Jason Moran (Thursday). At 8 and 10:30 p.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, Greenwich Village, 212-475-8592, bluenote.net. (Chinen)
