Coming to the Vortex Jazz Club

English: Chris Cheek, Moers Fesival 2009

From London’s Vortex:

THU 24 SEPTEMBER, FRI 25 SEPTEMBER
BARRY GREEN’S NEW YORK TRIO WITH CHRIS CHEEK, GERALD CLEAVER
A two-night affair in which Barry Green brings his eclectic experiences of playing with world class musicians to create a unique style. He is accompanied by Chris Cheek on saxophone (Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Steve Swallow) and Gerald Cleaver on drums (Craig Taborn, Tomasz Stanko, Charles Lloyd). This is an elastic, spontaneous, melodic trio reflecting a wide range of influences based on the trio’s collective experience of music making.

SUN 27 SEPTEMBER
MOPOMOSO
Continuing to present the very finest of musical free improvisation Mopomoso brings you four sets of which one is a UK debut, two are new to the club and the fourth is the return of an old favourite. Engaging music from the UK’s longest running series dedicated to free improvisation, now approaching its 25th year.

MON 28 SEPTEMBER
MARTIN SPEAKE AND LIAM NOBLE PLAY MONK
A duo using two of our great musicians, who have played together for over 20 years and have a special empathy. Both are well known at the Vortex but rarely do we have a chance for the intimacy and interplay that a duo like this can afford. Tonight will include Thelonious Monk arrangements of jazz standards.

TUE 29 SEPTEMBER
PAUL DUNMALL / LIAM NOBLE / JOHN EDWARDS / MARK SANDERS
Improvising quartet

WED 30 SEPTEMBER / THU 1 OCTOBER
FOR TWO NIGHTS: CHRISTIAN MUTHSPIEL WITH FRANCK TORTILLER, JEFF HERR, STEVE SWALLOW AND MATHIEU MICHEL
All of the compositions in this recording are based on Dowland‘s “Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares” instrumental cycle, in which seven different types of figurative tears are rendered polyphonically by five violas da gamba and a lute. The metamorphoses I propose stay close to the thematic content of the originals and use the special quality of Dowland’s lines and the resulting harmonies as fundamental structural elements to be rethought, modified and reinterpreted in a new context.

Black Spirituals in New York Reviewed

Source: The New York Times.

Both musicians come from academic experimental-music backgrounds, and they’ve been working together in Oakland since 2013. On Tuesday the duo, which came together in Oakland, Calif., in 2012, played its first show in New York, organized by Issue Project Room at the Sump, a new space in Ridgewood, Queens. From beginning to end, you might have heard the influence of the polyrhythmic free-jazz drummer Milford Graves; the slow, distorted, guitar-riff repetitions in a band like Earth, with whom the duo recently toured; and improvising electronic musicians like Toshimaru Nakamura, who like Mr. Watkins uses a mixing console and digital pedals as sound-generating devices in and of themselves, without instruments plugged into them.
