Jon Irabagon Releases and Profile

He just released a pair of impressive albums on his label, Irrabagast: “Behind the Sky,” a sure-footed dispatch from the postbop mainstream, and “Inaction Is an Action,” an outré, often abrasive solo recital on sopranino saxophone. Each album deserves attention, for divergent reasons. Most listeners will gravitate to one or the other, but neither alone presents a full picture of Mr. Irabagon’s style, which doesn’t suggest some attempt to repair a longstanding rift in jazz but rather an insouciant shrug over the premise. He operates post-rift, to the extent that anyone can.
