The JACK Quartet in NY Reviewed

Source: The New York Times.

The quartet’s performance of extracts from Schumann’s String Quartet No. 3 was part of “Run Time Error,” a dazzlingly off-the-wall evening of music, video and performance art by the visionary Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen. His writing for strings questions every convention of the genre: A player might run the bow alongside the wooden shoulder of a violin or drag it up and down the fingerboard. Another may hold a cello sideways, like a guitar, then sideways in the other direction, then flip it upside down so that it rests on its scroll.

Andy Milne’s The Seasons of Being Performances

Pianist/Composer Andy Milne Premieres The Seasons of Being, A New Suite for His Quintet Dapp Theory, In 3 September East-Coast Concerts (PA, Baltimore, NYC)

The Seasons of Being is a new project from pianist/composer Andy Milne. The 60-minute suite, composed for 10 musicians, is set around Milne’s genre-bending quintet, Dapp Theory, which occupies the cross roads between lyrical jazz piano, funkified polyrhythmic exploration, and spoken word poeticism. This project is a significant new direction for the band, representing their first large-scale collaboration with multiple improvisers. Dapp Theory is augmented with five diverse, top-notch improvisers from the New York creative music scene. Joining the band as special guests are:

Ralph Alessi – trumpet (Fred Hersch, Uri Caine)
Ben Monder – guitar (Maria Schnider, Lee Konitz)
La Tanya Hall – vocals & narration (Steely Dan, Bobby McFerrin)
Michael Attias – baritone saxophone (Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Oliver Lake)
Christopher Hoffman – cello (Henry Threadgill, Marc Ribot)
