Freedom at the Vortex takes place on the second Monday of each month and will see an opening set from a specific ensemble and that will be followed by a constantly shifting set of soul stirring improv session open to all… so, tune in and get involved. Between sets Straight No Chasers Paul Bradshaw delves into the vinyl – Oliver Lake to King Tubby.

The great Louis Moholo-Moholo returns to the UK from South Africa for one of his celebrated Vortex nights. Featuring Henry Lowther (trumpet), Alan Tomlinson (trombone), Jason Yarde and Ntshuks Bonga (saxophones), Alexander Hawkins (piano) and John Edwards (double bass) alongside the leader, the group’s repertoire includes many classics from the book of the legendary Blue Notes – Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana, Chris McGregor, Johnny Dyani, and Moholo-Moholo – as well as tunes from many other seminal groups driven by Moholo-Moholo’s drums (Spirits Rejoice, The Brotherhood of Breath, Viva La Black).

A major force in European improvising, Saxophonist Evan Parker has collaborated with everyone from Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley & Anthony Braxton, to Scott Walker, Robert Wyatt and Squarepusher. He is one of Europe’s most innovative and intriguing saxophonists, which is why he keeps audiences coming back for more.

Internationally renowned drummer Mark Sanders and rising star pianist Elliot Galvin come together to perform two sets of freely improvised music. This performance will be recorded and released on the Babel Label early next year.
