From The New York Times:
Stephan Crump’s Rhombal (Tuesday) Mr. Crump is a bassist with a broad stylistic frame, a sideman to both the pianist Vijay Iyer and his wife, the singer-songwriter Jen Chapin. His promising new band, Rhombal, has a front line of Adam O’Farrill on trumpet and Ellery Eskelin on saxophone, with Tyshawn Sorey, a smartly combustible drummer. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village, 212-989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com. (Chinen)
Chris Dingman (Friday) Mr. Dingman, a vibraphonist and composer drawn to softly luminous effect, has a chamberlike new album, “The Subliminal and the Sublime,” inspired by nature — with an eye toward both the grandeur and the granular. To celebrate the album’s release, he regroups its excellent cast: the alto saxophonist Loren Stillman, the guitarist Ryan Ferreira, the pianist Fabian Almazan, the bassist Linda Oh and the drummer Justin Brown. At 7 p.m., the Greene Space, 44 Charlton Street, at Varick Street, SoHo, 866-811-4111, thegreenespace.org. (Chinen)
Peter Evans Zebulon Trio (Sunday) Peter Evans, a trumpeter with an expressive command of timbre and texture, named this trio — with John Hébert on bass and Kassa Overall on drums — after the sorely missed club in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where it recorded an album. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village, 212-989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com. (Chinen)
Jonathan Finlayson (Friday and Saturday) Mr. Finlayson is an incisive and often surprising trumpeter, as he has demonstrated in groups led by the alto saxophonists Steve Coleman and Steve Lehman. He presents music commissioned by the Jazz Gallery, for a first-rate ensemble consisting of Mr. Lehman, the tenor saxophonist Brian Settles, the pianist Matt Mitchell, the bassist Mark Helias and the drummer Craig Weinrib. At 8 and 10 p.m., the Jazz Gallery, 1160 Broadway, at 27th Street, fifth floor, 646-494-3625, jazzgallery.org. (Chinen)
Jerome Cooper Memorial (Tuesday) Jerome Cooper, an alert, rigorously precise drummer best known as a member of the Revolutionary Ensemble, died last month at 68. This memorial concert will feature a number of his fellow avant-gardists performing in various combinations, including the cornetist Graham Haynes; the saxophonists Oliver Lake and Charles Gayle; the bassists William Parker and Joe Fonda; and the percussionists Barry Altschul, Reggie Nicholson, William Hooker, Adam Rudolph and Thurman Barker. At 7 p.m., Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue, near Third Avenue, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, 917-267-0363, roulette.org. (Chinen)
Bill Laswell at the Stone (through Sunday) The lineup for Mr. Laswell’s residency at the Stone runs as varied and head-spinning as you’d expect, though it puts the spotlight on his bass playing rather than his production work. He leads two versions of his experimental Method of Defiance project, on Friday and Sunday; on Saturday, he performs with the Last Poets. Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com.
