John Luther Adams on Leaving Alaska for New York

From The New Yorker:

Throughout the nineteen-eighties, I lived alone in a cabin down in the black spruce forest, several miles from here. There I would roll out of bed in the morning, crawl down the ladder from the sleeping loft, and find myself standing in the middle of my work. I loved it. And I couldn’t imagine living any other way.

Outset Series Programming for July 2015

Turn Turn Turn
8 NE Killingsworth
All shows begin 8 PM (ends by 10)
Sliding Scale $5-$15. All ages.

July 1 – Sustentacula, Prime Meridian
July 15 – Astral Pork Display, Katie Buono

Sustentacula is Ryan Stuewe (MPC, Tape loops, Electronics), David Rafn (Electronics, Vocals, Synthesizer, Tape loops), Lilly Gamaney (Vocals) and Alyssa Reed-Stuewe (Movement). We are trying to embody our love for music in every aspect of our pathetically humble actions. We love listening, we love playing, we love making faint-hearted clicking sounds in the impenetrable blackness of existence. We can’t ever hope to repay the debt that we owe music, but still we crawl like slugs towards the pinnacle of hermaphroditic, luminescent, self-obliterating union with it. (https://sustentacula.bandcamp.com)

Prime Meridian is a ‘chamber drone’ group focused on resonance and microtonality. The core instrumentation is two trombones and a laptop for digital signal processing. The group investigates the relationship between sound and physical space in the ‘electroacoustic’ sense, acknowledging elements of the ‘music concrete’ and ‘tape music’ philosophies. Microtonality is explored mostly through the aural interplay among the sound sources in the room. Interference beating and excursions outside of equal temperament are celebrated.

Astral Pork Display is the organick sonic collaboration of Ben Hampton, Kieran Mckeon, & Eddie Bond. (https://glitterbabiesunite.bandcamp.com/album/astral-pork-display)

Katie Buono is an interdisciplinary composer and performance artist. Her work investigates the connections between diverse artistic mediums, and the unveiling of meaning through meditative layered sound, text, image and occasionally performative elements. Her compositions, collaborations, performances and installations have been featured at The Tank, NYC, Spectrum, NYC, venues and public sites in Oberlin, OH, and with the In Noon Dance Collective, WAM Women Art and Music, Oberlin Dance Company, and Hans Tammen Third Eye Orchestra. Review of Saturday’s concerts at the Ojai Music Festival

From UTSanDiego.com:

Music director Steven Schick programmed two “Ojai Sunrise” concerts for the festival: On Sunday (the festival’s final day), with flutist Claire Chase and pianist Sarah Rothenberg, he performed Morton Feldman’s monumental, four-and-hour 1984 work, “For Philip Guston.” You pretty much know what to expect with this delicate, tactile piece; the only surprise, and admittedly it’s a big one, is how your mind and body interact with the music over that extended period of time.
