From New York’s Wordless Music:
In June and July, Wordless Music presents a small number of specially curated concerts at SubCulture: a new 200-capacity acoustic jewel at Bleecker and Lafayette in the East Village. For these shows, we’ve invited a few artists and labels we’ve had the privilege of working with before, and a few that we haven’t:
On Saturday, June 20, composer/pianist Rachel Grimes (of the pioneering Louisville post-rock band Rachel’s) leads an ensemble in works from her new album The Clearing, produced by Scott Morgan (Loscil) and released by the good people at Temporary Residence Limited.
On Tuesday, June 23, Colleen (a.k.a. the French musician Cécile Schott) plays her first New York show since 2007, to mark the release of her new album Captain of None on Thrill Jockey. Opening will be pianist Katya Mihailova, performing solo piano music of Messiaen, Satie, and Josquin, with visual accompaniment by lighting designer Sarah Frankel.
On Thursday, July 2, local composer/pianist David Moore leads the ambient orchestra (and returning series favorites) Bing & Ruth, after an intimate opening set by the Indiana singer-songwriter Haley Fohr, who performs under the name of Circuit des Yeux.
On Saturday, July 18, the German glitch composer/producer Uwe Schmidt, a.k.a. Arovane, plays New York for the first time in over ten years. Opening the show will be String Noise (violinists Pauline Kim Harris and Conrad Harris), performing solo and duo music for violin of Xenakis, Bach, and Scelsi, along with arrangements of even more contemporary fare to be announced from the stage.
And on Saturday, July 25, composer/guitarist (and newly signed Matador Records artist) Steve Gunn performs a stripped-down solo acoustic set that will sound especially glorious in SubCulture’s chamber music-type hall.
