Coming soon on Tzadik:

David Rosenboom
Naked Curvature

Active since the 1960s, composer/performer/ educator/instrument builder and improviser David Rosenboom, has been at the cutting edge of contemporary music, scoring for orchestra, opera, solo performance, chamber ensembles, improvisers, electronics, dance and more. This exciting release presents his whispered chamber opera/concerto grosso for six instrumentalists, whispering voices, electronics and interactive computer software. The recording was produced and conducted under the composer’s direction and features the virtuosic CalArts Chamber Ensemble. A unique masterwork from this legendary composer.

John Zorn
The Song Project Live at Le Poisson Rouge

A live concert version of Zorn’s acclaimed song project! In celebration of his 60th birthday, Zorn asked his most acclaimed vocal collaborators to write lyrics to select compositions from his vast musical catalog. Including music originally written for Naked City, Masada, The Dreamers, a variety of film soundtracks and more, “The Song Project” is a retrospective of some of Zorn’s most lyrical compositions from the past 25 years. This CD presents an all-star band performing live in New York after a dozen European concerts and at the peak of their powers. Electricity is in the air from first note to last! A perfect companion to the studio versions presented in the acclaimed box set of vinyl 7-inch singles.

Remembering Bernard Stollman: 10 Essential ESP-Disk Albums

ESP-Disk

From Stereogum:

Bernard Stollman died this week at 85. Unknown to most but a legend to many, he was one of the most important non-musicians in the history of the 1960s jazz avant-garde. Stollman, a lawyer, founded the ESP-Disk label in 1964, initially so he could release Ni Kantu En Esperanto, an album of songs and poetry in Esperanto (a language invented in the 1880s and intended to transcend national boundaries and thus foster international peace and understanding). The imprint’s second release, though, turned out to be one of the landmark jazz albums of all time — saxophonist Albert Ayler’s Spiritual Unity. Scorching and raw, this trio session can still take the top of your skull off.

Rova Saxophone Quartet Profiled

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

The Rova Saxophone Quartet came together in 1977 and performed its debut concert in February 1978 at a music festival at Mills College in Oakland, California. The group’s lineup — Jon Raskin, Larry Ochs, Bruce Ackley, and Steve Adams — has been the same since 1988, when Adams replaced Andrew Voight. Rova’s emphasis over the years has been on composition, mostly from its members but also from a distinguished list of composers who have written new-music works, including free-jazz pieces, for the quartet. Rova has made a place for itself at a point where those two categories overlap, making it at once adventurous and experimental.
