The Washington Square Contemporary Music Society continues its 38th season on Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 8 PM with a concert at the Tenri Cultural Institute. This program brings together The Chamber Players of the LeagueISCM and conductor David Fulmer with performers Sue Ann Kahn, flute, Benjamin Fingland, clarinet, Andrew Delclos, bassoon, Stephen Gosling and Eliko Akahori, piano, Alex Lipowski, percussion, Lois Martin, viola, as well as guest soloists P. Lucy McVeigh and Amanda Crider, soprano, and composer Jenny Olivia Johnson on synthesizer/electronics.

Ms. Johnson’s “Pilot” is an amplified microoratorio inspired by an Andes plane crash in 1972, and combines haunting electronic timbres with live processed voices, bassoon and piano. The world premiere of Louis Karchin’s “Excursions” combines electronic sounds with live viola, both parts emanating from a spectrallyderived sample of a viola melody. Other works include Andrew Rudin’s sonicallyrich “Portentum,” for solo percussion and Bruce Reiprich’s “Lambent,” based on subtle undulations emanating from the vibraphone and washing over the other instruments. Kaija Saariaho’s recent masterpiece for solo clarinet, “Duft,” combines traditional clarinet writing with
multiphonics and glissandi and Brian Fennelly’s “Quincunx,” with its haunting combination of quiet percussion and bass clarinet will complete the program.
