AMN Reviews: Bing & Ruth – Tomorrow Was the Golden Age (Rvng International)

homepage_large.5dc7da4cA collective that coalesced among music school friends in New York some ten years ago, Bing & Ruth come in like weather. Generally six or seven minutes each in length, one piece glides into the next, a dream dreamt by the piece that succeeds it.

Tomorrow Was the Golden Age features seven players (down from eleven on its first release) – two upright bassists (Jeff Ratner and Greg Chudzik), two clarinetists (Jeremy Viner and Patrick Breiner), cellist Leigh Stuart and a “tape delay tech” (Mike Effenberger), arabesquing a Persian carpet behind composer David Moore´s piano. Moore describes this effort as “drone-based with a lessened concern for perfect intonation”, a kind of suite, moving “from the darkness to the light and observ[ing] what that process would result in”.

Tomorrow Was the Golden Age are what haikus would sound like if they were explained at length. Remember that Bashō used the form as a jumping off point for collaborative compostion and telling longer tales. With similarly elegant simplicity, the pieces use few syllables to say things, like

A bee
staggers out
of the peony

and then spin their yarn.

The misty textures are gloriously complementary of Moore´s thoughtful piano playing, with the individual instrumentalists occasionally making very subtle forays out of their attuned cluster. Nearest to hand for comparison is Gavin Bryars, though in contrast, Bryars is downright breakneck. Tomorrow Was the Golden Age  might also call to mind Bang on a Can´s rendition of Brian Eno´s Music for Airports, but the piano, instead of slowly dripping honey, is a melodic voice that is very sweet, very articulate.

Steve Coleman and Five Elements (Friday and Saturday) Last year Mr. Coleman — a formidable alto saxophonist and composer, and a guru among the maverick class of jazz musicians — received a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, the so-called “Genius Grant.” His flagship band Five Elements has Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Anthony Tidd on bass and Sean Rickman on drums. For this engagement, part of the Jazz Gallery’s 20th anniversary festivities, it also has Marcus Gilmore as an additional drummer on Friday, and the guitarist Miles Okazaki on Saturday. Harris Eisenstadt and Golden State (Thursday) A venturesome drummer and composer, Mr. Eisenstadt likes to walk the line between free-form exploration and meticulous composition, and this texture-rich new ensemble — with the multireedist Marty Ehrlich, the bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and the bassist Eivind Opsvik — should suit that purpose handily. Vijay Iyer Trio (Saturday) The furiously productive pianist Vijay Iyer has just released another superlative album, “Break Stuff,” that confirms his stature in jazz’s contemporary vanguard, along with the dynamic excellence of his working trio. That group, featuring the bassist Stephan Crump and the drummer Marcus Gilmore, performs a special concert in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, drawing mainly from the new album. MET Chamber Ensemble (Sunday) At the core of an outstandingly ambitious program from the players of the Metropolitan Opera is the premiere of Elliott Carter’s “The American Sublime,” a setting of five poems by Wallace Stevens for baritone and ensemble. New York Philharmonic: Contact! (Saturday) The next concert in the Philharmonic’s Contact! series of contemporary music programs is titled “New Music From Nordic Countries.” The Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho has organized this program, offering works by Per Norgard, Kalevi Aho and Duro Zivkovic, along with the United States premiere of her own “Terra Memoria” for string orchestra. The Avant-Garde Other Minds Festival Celebrates 20 Years of Making Music on the Fringe

Billed enigmatically as “A Festival of Unexpected New Music,” this year’s event takes place from March 6 through 8 at the SF Jazz Center, and features a preposterously diverse program, including multiple world premieres. These include a microtonal string quartet by avant-garde stalwart Miya Masaoka, a truly ambitious multimedia installation based on avian migration by Norwegian composer Maja S.K. Ratjke, and a musical interpretation of our very own Twin Peaks (the S.F. location, not the TV show) with a trio led by Bay Area new music icon and tape music pioneer, Pauline Oliveros. But according to the festival’s founder and director, composer Charles Amirkhanian, this wildly eclectic programming results from the humblest intentions.

Drawing inspiration from the magical writings of Giordano Bruno and Alejandro Jodorowsky, Zorn recorded Psychomagia with Abraxas – a NYC quartet consisting of Aram Bajakian and Eyal Maoz on electric guitars, Kenny Grohowski on drums and Shanir Blumenkranz on electric bass/gimbri – who will perform the composition live.

Masada Book Two performed by Secret Chiefs 3
Zorn began composing Masada in the early ’90s, exploring his own roots and expanding the idea of Jewish music through a songbook that linked the language of klezmer and the rollicking free-jazz of Ornette Coleman. Now totaling 613 compositions, the Masada Songbook is a masterwork of overwhelming proportions. Secret Chiefs 3 – an experimental band from northern California who have been a part of Zorn’s collaborative circle for years – consists of visionary guitarist/composer Trey Spruance (formerly of Mr. Bungle and Faith No More), Eyvind Kang on violin, Ches Smith on drums, Jason Schimmel on guitar, Matt Lebofsky on keyboards and Toby Driver on bass.

Bladerunner (John Zorn, Bill Laswell & Dave Lombardo)
Not for the faint of heart, Bladerunner sees Zorn joined by legendary bass player and producer Bill Laswell along with heavy metal drumming powerhouse Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Fantômas). The band plays with notorious ferocity while still expressing incredible range. From frenetic, high-energy outbursts to solemn passages of introspection, calculated improvisation rules.

Although organ was Zorn’s first instrument (he often credits Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera as a primal influence), in 2011 the saxophone great surprised even his hardcore fans by initiating a new series of solo organ concerts in churches around the world. The music is breathtaking, and distinguished by a spiritual mood that only a huge pipe organ like Royce Hall’s Skinner can create. A perfect outlet for Zorn’s dramatic sense of color and contrast, this performance reveals the composer’s mind at work in all its permutations.

Nels Cline News

From Nels Cline:

Guitarist Nels Cline and Los Angeles-based painter Norton Wisdom–both masters of their medium and long partners in improvisation, joined together in 2009 for an afternoon of sonic and visual improvisation caught on film by Aught Nign. Armed with his guitar and effects, Cline constructs lush soundscapes brought about by Wisdom’s brush-stroke spontaneity. Wisdom in turn follows Cline’s auditory twists creating and recreating the same canvas.

Cline & Wisdom will reconvene this collaboration with three appearances this month most notably at Knoxville’s acclaimed Big Ears Festival on March 28. Cline will also play with singer Sam Amidon and Wisdom in two lead-up shows at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA on March 25 and The ArtsCenter in Carrboro, NC on March 26.

Stained Radiance will also perform at the Summer 2015 edition of Wilco’s Solid Sound Music & Arts Festival. Their performance will include a new dance work by choreographer/director Sarah Elgart of Arrogant Elbow.

Additionally at Big Ears, Cline reunites with the world famous Kronos Quartet on Sunday March, 29 in a collaboration originally premiered at UCLA in 2014, with an original composition, “Views from Here to the Heavens (For Scott Fraser),” which Cline was commissioned to write for Kronos, in honor for Kronos sound designer Scott Fraser on his 60th Birthday.

This week Cline will bring his band, The Nels Cline Singers, with drummer Scott Amendola, bassist Trevor Dunn and percussionist Cyro Baptista to Europe for their first ever European tour. Since founding the band in 2001, they have released 5 albums, including it’s latest, the 2014’s acclaimed Macroscope (Mack Avenue Records). Of Macroscope, NPR called it, “a record that has no boundaries, and an album with the musicianship to make that a memorable experience.” On Macroscope, Cline augmented his longstanding trio by adding the inventive percussionist Baptista, who has worked with Paul Simon, Yo-Yo Ma, Herbie Hancock and many others.

Finally the acclaimed experimental festival FIMAV (Festival International de Musique à Victoriaville) presents the world premiere of a supergroup called NELS CLINE SINGERS UNLIMITED; an amalgamation of artists and artistic alliances of Cline, including Amendola, Dunn and Baptista, plus keyboardist Brian Marsella, harpist Zeena Parkins & fellow guitar iconoclast Marc Ribot. The show will take place May 16th, 2015 in Victoriaville, Quebec.
