Alan Skidmore was part of Keith Tippett’s jazz fusion big band project Centipede and has worked – among others – with Soft Machine, Mike Gibbs, Elton Dean, and Kate Bush. Melling, Dankworth and Levin have played with a Who’s Who of British and American jazz of the last fifty years. Featuring Alan Skidmore on sax, Steve Melling on piano, Alec Dankworth on bass, and Miles Levin on drums.

MON 8 DECEMBER 20.00 / £10 / MD
ACHIM KAUFMANN / OLIE BRICE

This concert features the improvising duo of pianist Achim Kaufmann and double bass player Olie Brice. Berlin-based pianist Kaufmann is probably best known for his trio Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode, an improvising unit which has released four acclaimed albums. Double bassist Olie Brice has appeared at the Vortex with the likes of Paul Dunmall, Tony Malaby, Mark Sanders and Tobias Delius.

TUE 9 DECEMBER 20.00 / £10 / £12
JOHN BUTCHER / GUILLAUME VILTARD / EDDIE PREVOST

Following the critical acclaim for drummer Eddie Prévost’s bold series of recorded concerts in 2011, join us for this unique monthly live series, revisiting the Meetings with Remarkable Saxophonists recordings and discovering how the music has evolved. With John Butcher on saxophones, Guillaume Viltard on double bass, and Eddie Prévost on drums.

FRI 12 DECEMBER 19.30 £14 / £16 – BISHOPSGATE INSTITUTE
MICHAEL CHAPMAN + JAMES BLACKSHAW

Championed by John Peel in the 1970s, Yorkshire-born Michael Chapman has been compared to John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, and is celebrated for his uniquely English melancholic perspective and emotive guitar style. James Blackshaw performs celestial and spirit-lifting guitar-led compositions, spiralling gracefully across complex patterns, motifs and harmonics.
