Newsbits: Prepared Piano Concert at RPI / Cuneiform Interview / Stockhausen Kickstarter

EMPAC is hosting a concert featuring prepared piano on November 7th, with Stavros Gasparatos, where screws, rubbers, bolts, etc., are attached to the strings inside a piano, altering the sound.

Cuneiform Records’ Steve Feigenbaum is interviewed by What’s On Tap.

A Kickstarter has been launched for an evening celebrating the works of composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, with performances by students from the CalArts Community, to take place outside of Los Angeles.

Will Connell Residency at the Stone in December

From New York’s Stone:

Will Connell has been a deeply relevant part of this rather unclassifiable musical genre which prides itself on free improvisation as much as post-modern composition, global sounds and the bite of revolutionary politics. Usually preferring to be a member of a band as opposed to its leader, Connell may be the last of the modest greats. Having served as guest curator at the Stone in 2012, which brought him some note, and featured earlier this year in the Arts for Art organization’s series, and as a member of the Veterans of Free on the Tribute to ‘New York Eye & Ear Control’ concert in June, this master of the New Jazz now takes his rightful place at front and center.

Warren Smith and Marie Incontrera at Interpretations, November 20

From New York’s Interpretations:

Warren Smith Symphonic Quartet
Marie Incontrera Eco-Music Big Band

Thursday November 20, 2014
8PM at Roulette, in Downtown Brooklyn
509 Atlantic Ave (corner of Atlantic and 3rd Ave)

Composer and percussionist Warren Smith continues his` yearlong celebration of his 80th birthday with the premiere of his new Symphonic Quartet, with Sonelius Smith (piano & keyboard), James Stewart (woodwinds), Ratzo Harris (bass and cello), and Warren Smith on multiple percussion. The group will present a new hour-long composition, “Songs and Poems of ReReconstruction”. The title refers to similarities of current national and political activities in the US with those of the mid-19th century (postbellum).

Composer Marie Incontrera leads the Eco-Music Big Band in a tribute to her mentor, composer and baritone saxophonist Fred Ho, who passed away earlier this year. The Eco-Music Big Band is a 15-piece, multi-generational big band that is committed to continuing the prodigious compositional and creative legacy of Fred Ho. The ensemble also performs the works of the overlooked composers of 20th century (such as Cal Massey), and provides a platform for the next generation of big band composers. This evening will tribute the life and work of Fred Ho by featuring his works as well as the works of Cal Massey, of his final composition protege Marie Incontrera, and of young, Canadian-native big band composer, Liberte-Anne Lymberiou.
