Plying rhythmic forms and sonic colors in a shared language of improvisation, jazz pianists Andy Milne and Benoît Delbecq (a.k.a. Crystal Magnets) partner with the Japanese koto duo TsuguKaji-KOTO, amid the swirling washes of Saki Murotani’s projected animation. Conceived and composed by Milne—founder of Dapp Theory and noted veteran of New York’s downtown jazz scene—the 75-minute epic draws on the myth of the Rainbow Serpent as it opens new multilayered dialogues between East and West, sight and sound.
Zones of Influence
First written 30 years ago, David Rosenboom’s Zones of Influence is a landmark concert-length work for percussion soloist, live computer-generated electronics, and auxiliary keyboard and glissando instruments. At the time a breakthrough in linking virtuoso electroacoustic performance with interactive compositional algorithms, Zones is now fully realized—thanks to new a software instrument called the Touché II that allows the dynamic dimensionality of the music to take full mind-bending, cosmological shape. Rosenboom wrote the five-part epic expressly for superstar percussionist William Winant, who returns to perform on five live-processed percussion setups. He is joined by the composer on the Touché II, piano and violin, while Jinku Kim provides an immersive video environment for the concert. Rosenboom, one of the foremost voices in American composition since the late 1960s, released new double-CD recording of Zones of Influence on the Pogus Productions label this summer.
