A new look at ‘Science Fiction’ by The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus plays Ornette Coleman‘s Science Fiction tonight at Duke University.

Saturday, The Bad Plus (Iverson on piano, Reid Anderson on bass and David King on drums) will premiere their arrangement of Coleman’s 1971 album “Science Fiction” in Baldwin Auditorium. For this performance, the trio will be joined by Tim Berne and Sam Newsome on saxophones, and Ron Miles on trumpet. Duke Performances commissioned The Bad Plus to do an interpretation of “Science Fiction.” In 2011 Duke commissioned the group to re-imagine Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” The success of that collaboration led to Duke Performances approaching them again, and the band suggested doing “Science Fiction.”
