Longtime friends and musical collaborators Andy Cabic (Vetiver) and Devendra Banhart grab a couple of guitars and turn our atrium gallery into an intimate performance space. These two singer-songwriters formed the vanguard of an experimental and folk-influenced aesthetic that emerged in the Bay Area around the turn of the millennium. They will perform both individually and together, in a casual mix of older and newer material from their deep catalogs.
Programmed by Andy Cabic.Fri 10/17 7:30 PM Second Act [1727 Haight St SF]

Celebrating the release of their debut- LP on Sige Records, set in the intimate resonant confines of Second Act. Zachary James Watkins on sines, Marshall Trammell on skins. Tiny room made big… only tell your bestest.
Space Burn
Serious analog engines, but the upholstry is pure digital. Space Burn are Brian Tester and Steven Santa Maria, well-loved for their work with Triangle, Chen Santa Maria, Love chains, Wave and Particle, and more.
The Fathers
These two were tinkering in the garage out back, typical Dad stuff, trying to fix everything with twine. If you try to help you’re immediately perplexed, drawn into a paralyzing weird dad smell wondering what’s in front of you and why it’s making sound. Members of Coagulator and Headboggle.Fri 10/17 7:30 PM Center for New Music [55 Taylor St SF]

Since 1990 Satoko Inoue has been commissioning new piano music and performing new works to sold out audiences in Japan and throughout Europe. Her playing brings a sensitive and evocative form of expression to new music, sometimes surprising listeners with its beauty. Now she makes her first trip to the west coast bringing new compositions by Jo Kondo, Yuji Itoh, Yori-aki Matsudaira, Satoshi Tanaka, and Robert Coburn, as well as works by John Cage and others. Her annual concert series in Tokyo, “Music Documents – nothing but music”, and her featured performances at the Tokyo Opera City play to enthusiastic audiences and her recordings of music by Feldman, Ferrari, and Kondo are highly regarded.Wed 10/22 8:00 PM Berkeley Arts [2133 University Avenue, between Shattuck & Oxford walking distance from downtown Berkeley BART]

Rova Sax Quartet (Steve Adams, Bruce Ackley, Jon Raskin, Larry Ochs) returns to CNM distilling and evolving its 3+ hours of music performed at the Garden of Memory in Oakland from June 21, 2014. (This show will be shorter! About 60 to 80 minutes, tbd…) At the Garden of Memory, the band used simple structures created out of its “Radar” music vocabulary to perform extended “structured improvisations” with all kinds of subtly added nuance included in the performances at Chapel of the Chimes. Expect the Unexpected. http://www.rova.org
