The classic Cabaret Voltaire number Obsession as late-night doom(ed) jazz by Dub Mentor and band co-founder Stephen Mallinder, with soprano Hila Baggio providing yelping banshee punctuation. The skeletal original is nicely updated in three elegantly rearranged versions, not the least by the garbage can percussion and treated cello of Karni Postel. If absolutely necessary to categorize, this trio of versions might variously be likened to trip-hop, industrial dub or slow ambient jazz. Each are sneakily tweaked and flawlessly executed as they follow the indomitable lead of a scary, stalking bass.
