Sat 6/28 6:00 PM The Emerald Tablet [80 Fresno St, San Francisco, CA, 94133, United States]
The evening will begin with a presentation by composer and sound artist Brenda Hutchinson! She’ll be discussing some of her work in direct public engagement and presenting an interactive performance with the audience. After her talk we’ll have a Q&A, followed by a break. Then, the Johnston/Dutton/Rankin-Parker/Pearce Quartet will play a set of improvisational music inspired by Hutchinson’s presentation and the ensuing discussion.

Heaven Down Here is a unique chamber opera project by Andrew Jamieson that brings together sounds of avant-garde and experimental improvisation with traditional songs of the black gospel tradition and the Pentecostal church. It is also a re-presentation of Jim Jones’ Peoples Temple and both the great hope and great abuse that was found there. The first two performances will take place on June 25th and June 28th at 8:00pm at First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St. Oakland CA and tickets are $20/$10

Rova Saxophone Quartet in an intimate “chamber concert” at the classic Berkeley home of Harry Bernstein and Caren Meghreblian. “We’ll have two sets of Rova, with an intermission during which time we’ll be serving wine, cheese and fruit. We hope some of you can make it!” Music including notation and improvisation. Featuring a suite of pieces by the late Steve Lacy plus an array of Rova-composed works. Cheryl Leonard performs at the opening reception of her exhibition “Of Land and Sea: Natural-Object Instruments.” Leonard crafts music out of micro sounds from amplified sand, bone, rock, and wood in a performance inspired by martial arts and the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) from Chinese philosophy. A short interview and Q & A will follow the peformance.
