Heaven Down Here is a unique chamber opera project by Andrew Jamieson that brings together sounds of avant-garde and experimental improvisation with traditional songs of the black gospel tradition and the Pentecostal church. It is also a re-presentation of Jim Jones’ Peoples Temple and both the great hope and great abuse that was found there. The first two performances will take place on June 25th and June 28th at 8:00pm at First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St. Oakland CA and tickets are $20/$10. More…

The evening will begin with a presentation by composer and sound artist Brenda Hutchinson! She’ll be discussing some of her work in direct public engagement and presenting an interactive performance with the audience. After her talk we’ll have a Q&A, followed by a break. Then, the Johnston/Dutton/Rankin-Parker/Pearce Quartet will play a set of improvisational music inspired by Hutchinson’s presentation and the ensuing discussion.
