James Carter, a wildly charismatic tenor saxophonist, and Petra Haden, an equally irrepressible vocalist, had a moment halfway through “A Night of Improvised Round Robin Duets,” at Town Hall on Wednesday. It started almost songlike, with a haunting, wordless vocal melody answered by a limpid saxophone obbligato.
