Upcoming Anubis Quartet Events in Chicago

From Anubis Quartet:

Sunday February 2, 3:00pm

3111 N. Western Ave.
Chicago, IL
General Admission $10, Students $5

Anubis Quartet: Allison Balcetis, Michael Ibrahim, Ryan Muncy, David Wegehaupt

*with Amanda DeBoer-Bartlett, soprano
+with Eric Wubbels, piano

This Is This Is This Is (2009/2010) – Eric Wubbels (b. 1980)+
Der Blutige Schaffner (1997) – Robin Hoffmann (b. 1970)
Lucidity (2013) – Monte Weber (b. 1991)*
Intercepting a Shivery Light (2012) – Marcos Balter (b. 1974)

Eric Wubbels will join members of Anubis to perform his piece This Is This Is This Is, a work that explores ideas from David Foster Wallace’s late writing, which seeks a type of attentive consciousness that transforms the repetitious business of daily life into something sacred and transcendent. From Mr. Wubbels’ program note: “This is for David Foster Wallace. This is unison, concentration, and attention. This is extended repetition as a force against habit. (‘This is a Bronx-bound 2 express train.’ ) This is the constant gnawing sense of having had and lost some infinite thing. This is the connection between attention and ecstasy—ecstasy of physical gesture, ecstasy of sound, ecstasy of repetition.”
Robin Hoffman’s Der blutige Schaffner: Kontrolle/Entgleisung (The Bloody Conductor: Control / Derailment) utilizes a stunning variety of air sounds, extended techniques and vocalizations to turn the saxophone quartet into a noisy train from hell, complete with gears churning, air huffing and puffing, and horn(s) wailing. Written in 1997, this will be the North American premiere.

Anubis Quartet will also present the work of two Chicago-based composers, Monte Weber and Marcos Balter. This is the Chicago premiere of Anubis’ most recent commission, Monte Weber’s Lucidity, featuring the extraordinary Amanda DeBoer Bartlett. Written for and premiered by Anubis Quartet in 2012, Marcos Balter’s Intercepting a Shivery Light is intended to be first and foremost a “trippy” listening experience, using physical and harmonic patterns that weave, interact, and rotate, saturating the acoustic space.
