Tim Berne Interview

English: Tim Berne, jazz saxophonist; Picture ...

When alto saxophonist Tim Berne was in high school, he’d drive from Syracuse to Manhattan in his family’s green station wagon, bound for now-defunct clubs such as Slug’s Saloon and the Village Gate. His was a fan’s enthusiasm. He didn’t yet play an instrument. Jazz wasn’t a genre to him so much as a portal to adventure. “I never bought records of music I’d heard before,” Mr. Berne said in an interview. “If it sounded good but I didn’t get it, couldn’t figure it out, that was the best thing.”
