From New York’s ISSUE Project Room:

Thursday, October 3rd – 8:00pm
Oren Ambarchi
Okkyung Lee & Michelle Boulé
$20 / $15 members & students

Australian composer and multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi works with simple constructs and parameters, exploring an idea over an extended duration and patiently teasing every nuance and implication from each texture. His prolific output is hailed for its intricate harmonic patterns, carefully tended arrangements, and surrender to the physicality of sound.

A collaborative duo of two highly individualistic improvisers returns to ISSUE: dancer Michelle Boulé and cellist Okkyung Lee. Together, they push to the edge of sonic and choreographic boundaries into an atmospheric and sculptural consciousness, gradually penetrating and mapping out a spontaneously defined performance space. The elements that constitute the space of this collaboration— music, dance and light—become objects set into motion by the vehicle of improvisation where perception of form shifts, and a new dimension of performance opens.

Friday, October 4th – 8:00pm
Ken Vandermark & Nate Wooley
Jacques Demierre & Vincent Barras
$15 / $12 members & students

Chicago Saxophonist Ken Vandermark and New York trumpet stalwart Nate Wooley have worked together with a variety of collaborators, and this evening, for the first time, they strip all third parties away. This new raw and intimate duo promises an organic combination of jazz tradition, free improvisation, and modern composition.

Jacques Demierre and Vincent Barras have collaborated for decades, creating a diverse body of sound performances exploring ties between language and the mind. Tonight they present bh n (a), drawing on the work of Ferdinand de Saussure, and anatomical poems, which speculate on the primitive language that flows out of the open mouth.

Saturday, October 5th – 8:00pm
Bill Orcutt
Jon Mueller
$15 / $12 members & students

Former guitarist and founder of the noise/punk rock duo Harry Pussy, Bill Orcutt’s solo sound is a hiccup-stuttered reimagining of blues guitar. One can hear familiar Southern folk scales between Orcutt’s jagged solo acoustic phrases, pushing melodies into unresolved fragments that eventually come unmoored in vast and satisfying note-torrents.

Active since the mid-80s, avant-percussionist Jon Mueller’s contemplative, dense minimalism is truly singular– engaging a physical dialog between situation and material. Called “an audacious ringleader for new music” (Pitchfork), Mueller’s output spans post-rock, to free improv, to less classifiable forms. Tonight he plays solo.
