From NYTimes.com:

Myra Melford’s Snowy Egret (Thursday) Revisiting compositional forms she first developed years ago — in homage to the “Memory of Fire” trilogy, by the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano — Ms. Melford, a fearless pianist and harmonium player, leads an ensemble of fellow explorers. Its lineup includes the trumpeter Ron Miles, the guitarist Liberty Ellman, the bassist Stomu Takeishi and the drummer Tyshawn Sorey. At 8 p.m., Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue, near Third Avenue, Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, (917) 267-0363, roulette.org; $15, $10 for students. (Chinen)

Trio 3 Featuring Vijay Iyer (Friday and Saturday) The alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, the bassist Reggie Workman and the drummer Andrew Cyrille hail from the same broad-minded jazz generation, and share an agenda of rugged epiphany. Trio 3 is the name of their superhero collective, which has occasionally expanded its ranks to include a pianist: Geri Allen and Jason Moran have each taken recent turns. Vijay Iyer brings a similarly freethinking integrity to his engagement. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30 and $40 cover, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)
