Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora (Monday) Mr. Abdullah is a trumpeter and jazz educator with a history of impassioned work in the avant-garde. Diaspora is his tribute to a range of inspirations — including Sun Ra, the visionary keyboardist and composer in whose band he served — and its lineup on this occasion includes the poet and vocalist Monique Ngozi Nri, the baritone saxophonist Alex Harding, the bassist Radu, the pianist D.D. Vijay Iyer at the Stone (Friday through Sunday) The ever-productive pianist Vijay Iyer has been in residence this week at the Stone, and he concludes this weekend with three strikingly different trios. On Friday he presents Trioing, with the bassist Harish Raghavan and the drummer Justin Brown, who have been working together in a sharp band led by the trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Saturday’s sets will feature the ensemble from a recent album, “Tirtha” (ACT), with Mr. Iyer, Prasanna on guitar and Nitin Mitta on tabla. And on Sunday an electro-acoustic group will feature the violinist Mari Kimura and the bassist William Parker. Craig Taborn and Gust Burns (Saturday) Craig Taborn, who has proven himself a pianist of nearly boundless imagination, teams up here with Gust Burns, a Seattle native who approaches pianism, and improvisation, from a complementary angle. They recently played a brief duo set as part of the one-year anniversary celebration for the Sound It Out series; returning to the series here, they’ll have more space to stretch out. Trio 3 Featuring Vijay Iyer (Tuesday through Aug. 10) The alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, the bassist Reggie Workman and the drummer Andrew Cyrille hail from the same broad-minded jazz generation, and share an agenda of rugged epiphany. Trio 3 is the name of their superhero collective, which has occasionally expanded its ranks to include a pianist: Geri Allen and Jason Moran have each taken recent turns. Vijay Iyer, on board next week, brings a similarly freethinking integrity to his engagement.
