Katherine Young Video Interview

Joann Cho, Jenna Lyle, and Katherine Young per...

From NewMusicBox:

Composer, improviser, and bassoonist Katherine Young takes an adventurous, creative, and extremely hardworking approach to her career. She seems at home in a variety of musical communities: from the DIY band scene in Brooklyn to the improvised-music scene in Chicago to the academic composition department at Northwestern where she now studies. To help me prepare for our interview, Young handed me an impressive stack of CDs. Most were released on small boutique labels; one cover was beautifully hand-stitched by Young herself. Each of the represented projects—Young as solo bassoonist, her improvising duo project Architeuthis Walks on Land, her rock/experimental quartet Pretty Monsters—has toured in the United States and in Europe.

Bang on a Can asked the composers to base their works on field recordings, either their own or others’. For his piece of fun, Mr. Deacon, who according to his biography strives to take experimental and electronic music out of the domain of “esoteric intellectual gangs and hipster communities,” transcribed a recording a NASA Voyager made on its trip through space.

The Great Hall, University of Leeds, April 20 2013, 12:00-18:00. Free entry, and free parking available on campus (subject to availability).

Performances of the works of Alvin Lucier by staff and students of the School of Music at Leeds University, with guest performers. This is a mixed installation/concert event, there will be a timetable of pieces released (nearer to the event), the free-duration pieces will be run for 45-60mins, while shorter pieces will be played more than once across the day. Chairs will be provided around the room should you wish to sit and listen, but the audience are also free to move and explore the space. The focus of the event is on pieces involving resonance, from the sound of the room itself being layered up in an ever-increasing density of room-tone in “I am Sitting in a Room“, to the audience participation of Chambers, where the acoustics of small found-objects are explored. The following list of pieces are currently being prepared, others may be added later.
