Upcoming Detroit Shows

From the Bohemian in Exile:

Saturday, Dec. 8: Frode Gjerstadt Trio

For more than 30 years, saxophonist/clarinetist Frode Gjerstadt has been a primary figure in the Norwegian improvised music scene. In the early years, he was forced to play with musicians from other countries because he had no like-minded peers at home. As his international reputation grew, he helped to cultivate younger players back in Norway. His ferocious sound has accompanied John Stevens, Peter Brotzmann, Evan Parker, Han Bennink, William Parker and Hamid Drake. One fellow Norwegian who paid early dues with Gjerstad is drummer Paal Nilssen Love. Love is a frequent visitor to Detroit and his outstanding approach has been heard here in a variety of settings. Though he is firmly rooted in Europe’s free improvising scene- playing with The Thing, OffOnOff and Sten Sandell- he also seems to have a second home in Chicago, where he can be found driving groups with Ken Vandermark and the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet. Doors at 8 pm.

Saturday, Dec. 15: Danjee Flesh Nation, Ritual Howls, Airport

From the mind of Jimbo Easter comes Danjee Flesh Nation- a true spectacle of dark sounds, pageantry and performance that stakes a claim to its own, personal corner of Detroit Music. Sharing lead vocals responsibilities his wife Jennifer Price (who designs much of Danjee Flesh’s costumes and imagery), this may be the most dramatic husband and wife one-two punch in art-rock. The often associated Paul Bancel joins the bill with his new group Ritual Howls and Ypsilanti experimental synth and trumpet duo, Airport, round out the evening. Doors at 9 pm; $5.
