Saturday, Nov. 17: Tatsuya Nakatani
A perennial favorite of our series, percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani has established himself as one of the most important new voices on his instrument. Although he excels in many different situations, there’s no better way to experience what he does than the solo set that he’ll be presenting for us at Trinosophes. From a seemingly limited resource of percussion, Tatsuya creates complete soundscapes, using extended techniques to coax every possible tone from each instrument or object; his mastery of bowed gong has to be seen to be believed. Originally from Osaka, Japan, Tatsuya now resides in Pennsylvania. He has collaborated with Billy Bang, Peter Kowald, Mary Halvorson, Eugene Chadbourne, Akron Family, Thollem McDonas and many others. He also loves Johnny Cash. Doors at 8 pm; $5-10 suggested donation.
Tuesday, Nov. 20: Positive Knowledge: Oluyemi Thomas, Kenn Thomas, William Parker, Kurt Prisbe
Positive Knowledge is the group lead by bass clarinetist and former Detroiter Oluyemi Thomas and featuring, for this performance, free jazz titan William Parker on double-bass.
