BUSHMAN’S REVENGE + ALBATROSH + SYNKOKE

Bushman’s Revenge mix the energy of rock with the freedom of jazz in the most exciting and exhilarating ways. Jazzwise called their previous album on Rune Grammafon “insanely good”.

Albatrosh are saxophonist André Roligheten and pianist Eyolf Dale. Both players are “formidable improvisers” (The Guardian), and pair structured compositions with improvisation, generating a “quirkily dynamic” soundworld.

Completing this Norwegian triple bill, Synkoke build choir-like drones peppered with edgy saxophone and guitar interventions, stormy percussion, inventive bass and thrash-jazz sprints, playing “with a fearful intensity, as if their lives depended upon it” (The Jazz Mann).

MATTHEW SHIPP TRIO

He might be older and wiser, but Matthew Shipp has not mellowed with age. A galvanizing force among the heirs to jazz’s avant-garde movement of the 1960s, the pianist has spent the past quarter century building a vast, rolling musical universe.

This event will be broadcast in Jazz on 3 on Monday 12 November.

TOWNSHIP COMETS

Led by vocalist Pinise Saul, with Chris Batchelor (trumpet), Harry Brown (trombone), Jason Yarde (saxophone), Adam Glasser (piano), Dudley Phillips (bass) and Frank Tontoh (drums), the Comets play the searing, joyous music of saxophonist Dudu Pukwana.

KEN VANDERMARK / PAAL NILSSEN LOVE / AB BAARS

Double Tandem is an international collaboration of three fiercely individual artists from Netherlands, the USA and Norway, as they find new ways to explore spontaneous sounds and narrative. A collage of contrasting perspectives on time and melody, their music explores sonic languages inspired by jazz and world cultures, tossing ideas into the air and reinventing them with the intelligence of master improvisers.

KEITH & JULIE TIPPETT + JAAK SOOAAR & LIUDAS MOCKUNAS

Keith and Julie Tippett are acknowledged as two of the most distinctive and original musicians in jazz and improvised music. In their fifth decade of marriage and making music together they perform an evening of spontaneous composition, the architecture being complete only when the last note has drifted into silence.

Lithuanian multi-reeds player/composer Liudas Mockunas conjures extraordinary sounds from the bass saxophone, performing a special duet with Estonian guitarist/free improviser Jaak Sooäär an explosive mixture of free jazz and edgy interaction from the Baltic.
