Jazz Listings From The New York Times

From NYTimes.com:

Thurman Barker’s Time Factor / Mark Taylor Secret Identity (Friday) The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians presents one of its sporadic New York concerts, in two parts. Mr. Barker, a veteran drummer, leads an ensemble with James Emery on guitar, Rob Schwimmer on keyboards and theremin and Jerome Harris on bass; and Mr. Taylor, primarily known as a French horn player, turns to piano in a band with the alto saxophonist Darius Jones, the bassist Ken Filiano and the drummer Michael Thompson. At 8 p.m., Community Church of New York, 40 East 35th Street, Manhattan, (212) 594-7149, aacm-newyork.com; $30; $15 for students. (Chinen)

John Coltrane Festival (Friday and Saturday) Jazz at Lincoln Center has banged this gong before, as recently as 2006, but when the subject holds so much possibility it’s churlish to complain. John Coltrane’s legacy as a saxophonist and composer will be the subtext of a pair of concerts at the Rose Theater, featuring the saxophonist Joshua Redman with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; his legacy as a bandleader and melodist propel a program at the Allen Room, with his former pianist McCoy Tyner leading an impressive ensemble that includes the bassist Dave Holland and the drummer Jack DeJohnette. Mr. Redman: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Rose Theater, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 60th Street and Broadway; $30 to $120. Mr. Tyner: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, 60th Street and Broadway; $55 to $65; (212) 721-6500, jalc.org. (Chinen)

Oliver Lake 2 Trios (Friday and Saturday) Oliver Lake, a multireedist and composer with acres of experience in the self-sustaining avant-garde (he was a founder of both the Black Artists Group in the 1960s and the World Saxophone Quartet in the ‘70s) turned 70 last month, and has been celebrating with a series of engagements. This one features him with a different trio each night: on Friday he works with two drummers, Reggie Nicholson and Bill McClelland, and on Saturday he leads his organ trio, with Jared Gold on Hammond B3 and Chris Beck on drums. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village, (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; $20 cover, $10 for members. (Chinen)

John Yao Quintet (Saturday) John Yao is a resourceful young trombonist whose recent debut, “In the Now” (Innova), shows him to be a smart composer-bandleader besides. He appears here with the album’s rhythm section — the pianist Randy Ingram, the bassist Leon Boykins and the drummer Will Clark — and a worthy substitute saxophonist, Bryan Murray (standing in for Jon Irabagon). At 9 p.m., Sycamore, 1118 Cortelyou Road, Brooklyn, (347) 240-5850, sycamorebrooklyn.com; $10. (Chinen)
