Coming to the ISSUE Project Room

From New York’s ISSUE Project Room:

Nate Wooley + Mazen Kerbaj
Wed, September 19, 2012 – 8pm
At Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral, 113 Remsen St, Brooklyn

From Time Out New York:
“Nate Wooley, a local trumpet radical who explores the fruitful gray area between avant-jazz and noise, shares a bill with like-minded Beirut brassman Mazen Kerbaj, who attracted international attention during the 2006 Lebanon War when he “dueted” with the sounds of bombs dropped by the Israeli Air Force. Conditions ought to be friendlier for tonight’s show, but expect these two performers to find their own ways of maximizing aesthetic tension during this program of solos and duos.”

Joseph Keckler + Mac Wellman
Thu, September 20 – 7pm (Doors 6:30)
BAM Fisher, Hillman Studio: 321 Ashland Place, Brooklyn

Joseph Keckler is a musician, writer, raconteur, and performance artist known both for his musical output as well as for creating narrative monologues and collage-like performance and video works, often musical, that involve transformation through multiple characters. Playwright, author, and poet Mac Wellman joins.

Short takes from RIDE A COCKHORSE by Raymond Kennedy
Fri, September 21 – 7pm (Doors 6:30)
BAM Fisher, Hillman Studio: 321 Ashland Place, Brooklyn

Stephen Ruddy, director of Upright Citizens Brigade’s “Gravid Water” directs a dramatic reading of Brooklyn author Raymond Kennedys darkly comic 1991 novel Ride a Cockhorse, recently reprinted by NYRB Classics. Forty-five-year-old Frances Fitzgibbons has gone from sweet-tempered bank loan officer to insatiable force of nature almost overnight. Suddenly shes brazenly seducing the high-school drum major, taking over her bosss office, firing anyone who crosses her, inspiring populist fervor, and publicly announcing plans to crush her local rivals en route to dominating the entire banking industry in the northeast.

Extended Techniques is a new contemporary music site, current offering a John Cage podcast.

England’s Safehouse Brighton presents On The Edge: Ken Vandermark (saxophone and clarinet), Olie Brice (double bass), Marks Sanders (drums), Friday September 28th, 2012 – 8:00pm to 11pm, upstairs at the OPEN HOUSE pub, Springfield Road, Brighton, BN1 6BZ.

Avantwhatever Peter Blamey’s Forage as the next in their series of limited edition releases.

A Kickstarter project to preserve the tape archive of Malachi Ritscher has been initiated.

Consider the Source with John Zorn’s music with ABRAXAS will take place at Sullivan Hall, New York City. Producer and bassist Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz has been a mainstay of the downtown scene for over a decade now, working with and producing CDs by Daniel Zamir, Cyro Baptista, Eyal Maoz, Jon Madof, Yoshie Fruchter and more. Here he steps out on his own to make one of the most tribal and primal installments in the Book of Angels series. Drawing on his Sephardic roots, Shanir plays gimbri throughout, giving the music a primeval Moroccan edge. Featuring the intense guitar pyrotechnics of Eyal Maoz (Edom, 9 Volt with Time Berne, Hypercolor) and Aram Bajakian (who recently has been tearing it up in Lou Reed’s new band) and the atavistic drumming of Kenny Grohowski.

Another John Cage tribute takes place in Buenos Aires, Saturday 22 September, 18 hs, at Fundación PROA / Pedro de Mendoza 1929. 60 years after its Premiere , Fundacion PROA presents the same program played on August 29th, 1952 by Davis Tudor. For piano de Christian Wolf, Extensions #3 de Morton Feldman, 3 pieces for piano de Earle Brown, Premier Sonata de Pierre Boulez, 5 Intermissions de Morton Feldman, For prepared piano de Christian Wolf, 4’33” de John Cage, The Banshee de Henry Cowell.
