On Friday, September 21st, Firehouse 12 is pleased to present Paradoxical Frog with Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, and Tyshawn Sorey as they celebrate the release of their new album Union (Clean Feed). Each member contributes compositions in this collaborative project.
Paradoxical Frog have been called “one of the most simpatico trios to arise in town in some time” (Kurt Gottschalk, Squid’s Ear). “Unassumingly, quietly, Paradoxical Frog makes some stunningly good music that has the essentialism of ‘new music’ but the passion (when needed) of the improv approach” (Gapplegate Music Review). Josef Woodward of JazzTimes wrote the “empathic trio presents a colorful and convincing example of post-free jazz, mixing intricate rhythmic notions, introspective musings and moments of cathartic release.”
Kris Davis has performed with Tony Malaby, John Hollenbeck, Chris Speed, Tom Rainey, amongst others. Her most recent recording is the solo piano album Aeriol Piano (Clean Feed). Ingrid Laubrock has performed with Tim Berne, Mark Helias, Evan Parker, Mary Halvorson, John Edwards, Tom Rainey and others. She was awarded the 2006 Fellowship in Jazz Composition from the UK-based Arts Foundation and leads and co-leads numerous ensembles in New York City. Tyshawn Sorey is a sought-after drummer and prolific composer. He has performed with Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Braxton, Ray Anderson, Wadada Leo Smith, Steve Coleman, Michele Rosewoman and many others. His debut recording as a leader, that/not, is on Firehouse 12 Records. His most recent release is Oblique (Pi Recordings).
