You don’t have to play Aaron Novik’s new album “Secrets of Secrets” backward to discover the encrypted messages hidden in the notes, but a quick course on Kabbalah might help. Released in February on John Zorn‘s Tzadik Records, “Secrets” is the latest in a series of wildly ambitious projects by the San Francisco clarinetist/composer. Employing various esoteric techniques – including gematria, which finds coded messages in sacred Jewish texts by assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters – Novik has created a metal jazz/klezmer suite for a large cast of singular improvisers.
